Video Manifesto was established in 2008 with the goal of opening a media training course in one of the slums of Rio de Janeiro by August 2009. The deadline is fast approaching and we need your help.
Video Manifesto is a UK registered charity that aims to give the disadvantaged youth of the slums of Rio de Janeiro a better future through the power of education and training. Video Manifesto believes that the art of filmmaking will provide these youths with an outlet in which to express themselves - a chance to manifest themselves.
The young people of the slums have no access to higher education and are therefore unable to escape the poverty of their community. The failure of the state to establish itself and a lack of education in Rio's poorest communities has allowed drug gangs to take over the slums. These gangs now control many of these slums and there are regular, violent confrontations with the police. It is an undercover civil war. Our media training courses will give the young people in these communities an opportunity to express themselves while gaining the skills and qualifications necessary to obtain a future career.
